Who is ICROA?
The International Carbon Reduction and Offset Alliance (ICROA) was established in 2008 as a non-profit membership organisation to represent the interests of service providers in promoting best practices in voluntary action on climate change. It unites businesses committed to establishing high standards of integrity in the market for climate solutions. It is a programme within the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA).
What are ICROA’s objectives?
ICROA promotes voluntary action on climate by individuals and entities through carbon neutrality to accelerate the transition to a global net zero economy that balances greenhouse gas emission sources and sinks. ICROA’s core purpose is to develop, apply and advance best practices in voluntary climate action. ICROA works to enable individuals and entities to compensate for their unabated greenhouse gas emissions within their operations and supply chains by financing emission reduction and removal activities beyond their direct control enabled by the voluntary carbon market.
What ICROA does
- For individuals and organisations taking voluntary action on climate: ICROA maintains a Code of Best Practice which defines and promotes leading practice in the use of market-based instruments and climate finance to achieve and communicate voluntary climate action.
- For its members: ICROA represents its members as the voice of the voluntary carbon market. It promotes collaboration across key stakeholders and influencers to enhance confidence in and respect for the value and impact of voluntary climate action. It ensures that members are in compliance with the ICROA Code of Best Practice through an annual cycle of third-party audits.
ICROA champions immediate and meaningful action to fully compensate for the global warming impact of an individual or entity to accelerate the transition of the global economy to a science-informed goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 or sooner.
ICROA promotes voluntary action by entities which combines the measurement and abatement of emissions with the finance of emission reductions and removals in locations outside their direct control and which are additional to regulatory requirements.
ICROA works to ensure the environmental integrity of greenhouse gas accounting for emissions and emission reductions and removals. It promotes the use of compensating emission reductions and removals that are verified and registered under respected third-party standards and protocols so that claims of neutrality are backed with publicly accessible information that underpins the quality and integrity of voluntary action.
ICROA advocates for actionable, understandable and pragmatic responses to climate that can be widely adopted by organizations and individuals committed to advancing climate solutions, wherever they may be on their journey to a net zero economy.
ICROA promotes approaches that establish a fair price of carbon to ensure that production, consumption and trade of products and services reflect the impact of climate change on the social, natural and financial systems and address global sustainable development goals.
